Over the years since Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, he has had no fewer that 25 different logos emblazoned upon his chest.
Most still retained the familiar red & yellow coloring with the red 'S' as the focal point. However ther have been several exceptions to this rule.
In the 1948 Superman Columbia serials the logo was back & white (a white back ground with a black 'S') and in the 1997 "Electric Blue" Superman the logo was a pale blue background with a white 'S'
The 90 degree inverted infinity symbol (or figure 8) is displayed on the picture to the left as an entirely black symbol. However this is the Mark of the House of El and could be considered flesh colored as it was burned onto Supermans chest by his father Jor- El during an episode of the 2002 Smallville series.
There have been 4 x Black & Red logos throughout Supermans 60+ years history as the caped crusader.

- In the 1940 comic Superman #4
- Max Fleischers Superman in 1941 which included a series of 17 cartoons in Technicolor released by Paramount.
- In the Kingdom Come mini-series, which was a 4 issue comic book published in 1996 by DC Comics under the Elseworlds imprint.
- 2003 Superman/Batman....this was more the logo of the comic book series of the same name, featuring both these superheroes in a joint crime fighting role and showing their friendship and opposing views.
